The objective of Pilot Project 5 is to apply hydraulic models and territorial and environmental analyses to the restoration of surface water exchange between the Doñana marsh and the Guadiamar River, and to the development of a comprehensive surface water management model in the Doñana Natural Area.

The University of A Coruña, Yuntas, and the University of Limoges will carry out hydrological, territorial, and hydraulic studies to construct a numerical model capable of simulating different water inflow scenarios from the rivers that have historically The project will analyze the flooding of Doñana National Park and the water flows within the park to create a water management model capable of predicting the behavior of annual floods and their impact on plant and animal communities.

This will be carried out with the support and supervision of the Guadalquivir River Basin Authority and the scientific and technical support of the Doñana Natural Area (Regional Government of Andalusia – Ministry of Sustainability and Environment) and the Doñana Biological Station (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC).

The expected results will constitute a powerful tool for the water management of an area like Doñana and the Guadalquivir Estuary, where the interaction between freshwater and marine water is critical for the recovery and survival of one of the most emblematic natural and biodiversity hotspots in the entire EU.
